Coal blocks: CBI registers preliminary enquiry

CNN-IBN | 01-Jun 18:15 PM

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday registered a preliminary enquiry into the coal block allocation. This comes a day after the CVC referred the allocation between 2006 and 2009 for a CBI probe.

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has asked the investigating agency to complete the inquiry in three months.

However, the preliminary probe will not look into the policy matters.

According to reports, the CBI will examine the auction process of the coal blocks between 2006 and 2009. Officials of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) will also be consulted about their report and the process they followed.

A final decision to covert into regular FIR will only be taken after looking into the evidence during the preliminary enquiry, which will cover the role of all bureaucrats, officials, private companies and ministers, and the screening committee which recommended the names.

The preliminary enquiry will also investigate and calculate loss due to any irregularities in the auction process.
