Defence industry needs private help: Gen Singh

New Delhi: Army Chief General VK Singh on Friday stressed on independent capability in the defence industry while pointing out that the industry has grown many folds in the last few years. Addressing an ASSOCHAM meet, General Singh said, "The Indian defence industry has grown. We need to be self reliant and maintain independent capability."
Speaking of private participation in the defence industry, General Singh said, "The private sector participation has been debated upon for a long time in the defence industry. The demand of private participation has gone up in the recent times."
"The scope for defence related private industry is expected to grow exponentially," he added.
Stressing on the need for coordination, General Singh said, "We need much closer coordination for long term investments between various departments and sections concerned. We need to look at innovativeness. Offset policy needs to be analysed by the industry to make the best possible use of it."
He also said that the armed forces were committed to promote indigenisation. "Joint ventures must go to joint design and joint production," General Singh added.
