Jammu and Kashmir: Militant-cop nexus busted

Srinagar: In a major embarrassment for the Jammu and Kashmir police, four of its undercover cops have been arrested for allegedly working with militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. They even allegedly carried out attacks on security forces - the latest such incident was in Khanyaar where seven CRPF personnel were injured.

One of the spy cops, Mukhtar Sheikh, had been arrested earlier for allegedly providing SIM cards to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) used in 26/11 Mumbai attacks

IGP Kashmir SM Sahai said, "These people were informing the militants about police officers who are at the forefront of fighting militancy, our operational details. The militants would get prior information and be careful."

Sheikh was arrested in Delhi last time and later released.

Police got a whiff on the nexus when they found out that a cop named Abbas was actually in touch with a militant based in Pulwama.

Later they found an IED-making literature on him and his interrogation led to three more names.

The police admits while such covert operations are useful in counter-insurgency and have paid off in the past, the possibly of a spy cop network going bust - although rare - always exists. That said, police sources say this certainly will not stop them on innovating anti-militant drives.
