Kashmir: The search operations are still on in Gurez and Sonmarg after two major avalanches took the lives of 17 jawans. However, two young rescuers made it alive after being trapped under snow for 30 hours.
For Syed Akbar and Mohd Rafique, it's almost a new lease of life. The two employees of the Sonemarg Dev Authority, braved it out under a bridge for 24 hours before help came to them. Early Friday morning, the duo were shifted to an abandoned house by the Army rescue team.
"Army personnel rescued and dropped us to our homes," both survivors said.
But Amit Sharma, who was also trapped under the snow, was not as lucky as Syed Akbar and Mohd Rafique. A soldier in the territorial army unit, Sharma was buried under an avalanche in Gurez . At his village in Pathankot, his parents and wife are inconsolable.
Over the past two days, Gurez and Sonmarg have felt nature's fury. For the Army too it has not been easy fighting natural adversities and rising casualties.
The Kashmir Disaster Management Authority has sounded out the Army to be on alert for the next few days.
