New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress is upset with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee over his comment in Parliament on Wednesday that he cannot favour West Bengal alone for debt relief. The Finance Minister had said that as the Union Finance Minister he couldn't be seen favouring one state alone.
"I represent West Bengal. I have a responsibility for the state but as the federal minister I cannot overlook the other states. We have to overcome the crisis collectively," Pranab had said on Wednesday.
Trinamool Congress leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said, "It is wrong on the part of the Congress to comment on us. Look at the way they manage the situation. It's been over 34 years of misrule in Bengal and Pranab may say that interest waiver difficult, but we can manage."
West Bengal has sought a three-year moratorium on debt repayment from the Centre. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had in fact given a deadline earlier to the Centre over the issue.
There were reports that the Centre was also mulling a financial aid package for the state. But a Congress MP even criticised Mamata for not doing enough to improve the state's finances.
