Charkhari (Uttar Pradesh): After targeting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has taken on Bharatiya Janata Party's star campaigner Uma Bharti in the election-bound state.
While addressing an election rally in Bundelkhand's Charkhari on Thursday, Rahul Gandhi said that Uma Bharti had never done anything to develop the backward region.
"A BJP leader (Uma Bharti) has come from Madhya Pradesh. Where was she when farmers were dying in Bundelkhand? Now that elections are here she has come to you," said Rahul.
Uma Bharti will contest from Charkhari, which is in Mahoba district of Bundelkhand.
The firebrand BJP leader was quick to take a swipe at Rahul and Congress's Uttar Pradesh in-charge Digvijaya Singh, claiming that she would demolish the party in the elections just like she had done in Madhya Pradesh.
Rahul should remember the background of his mother. Sonia Gandhi came from Italy and has been accepted in India. If Italy's Sonia was accepted in India, I am only from Madhya Pradesh where I defeated his mentor Digvijaya Singh. Now the mentor and disciple are in Uttar Pradesh, and I will defeat them once again," said Uma Bharti.
She also said that the development package announced by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government was just eyewash.
"They had announced a package for Bundelkhand. We are looking for that package, have been unable to find it. Farmers are committing suicide and people from Bundelkhand are working as labourers in Delhi. I do not want to play petty politics, do not want to make such comments. I want to fight elections on serious issues. I am only replying to his comments," she said.
Under her leadership, the BJP had ousted the Digvijaya Singh government of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh after 10 years in 2003.
Both Rahul and Uma Bharti are trying to revive the fortunes of their respective parties in Uttar Pradesh, and have been aggressively campaigning in the state.
