Srinagar: Official of GB Pant hospital removed

CNN-IBN | 18-May 09:30 AM

Srinagar: After CNN-IBN's sustained reporting on the issue, the medical superintendent of the GB Pant hospital in Srinagar has been removed. Now the Opposition to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's government has demanded the Prime Minister's intervention.

The PDP and an independent MLA have also demanded a CBI probe. As many as 359 infants have died in Srinagar's only paediatric hospital since January.

CNN-IBN had reported how the lack of medical care has led to the death of over 62 infants in three months. The hospital is facing an acute shortage of trained staff and medical equipment, the reports said.

The hospital has literally become a death trap. In the past six weeks alone, 30 infants have died due to doctors' negligence and inadequate health equipment to tackle the crisis.

The doctors say they are unable to cope with the huge overload because of a shortage of trained staff and machines. In the ICU, as against a required 20 to 30 ventilators, there are only five.
