TN: NCERT in anti-Hindi agitation cartoon row

New Delhi: Just days after the Ambedkar cartoon created an uproar in Parliament, yet another cartoon in an NCERT textbook seems to have upset the politicians, this time in the south. A cartoon in the Class 12 Political Science textbook in Tamil Nadu highlights the state's anti-Hindi agitations in 1938 and 1965. The twin agitations were spearheaded by the Dravidian parties including the DK and the DMK. The parties have now condemned the cartoon, saying it ridicules their movement.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi said, "The 1938 and 1965 anti-Hindi agitations are moments of pride for the DMK. The cartoon ridiculing such a movement would infuriate Tamils. Therefore, the Centre should immediately intervene and ensure it is removed from the textbooks with a view to respect the Tamils' sentiments."

However, the NCERT has said that the textbook recognises the regional movements and believes that they helped in the building a strong nation.

"One cannnot look at the cartoon in isolation. One has to take into consideration the text and other elements in the book," said Yogendra Yadav.

However, will the NCERT manage to convince those raising the voice of protest or will they have to bend down to protests once again?
