UP health scam: CBI arrests former Lucknow CMO

CNN-IBN | 19 Jun 2013 12:25 pm

Lucknow: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested former Lucknow Chief Medical Officer (CMO) AK Shukla for allegedly conspiring to kill two other Lucknow CMOs in jail.

Shukla worked in the UP Family Welfare Department and was arrested for financial irregularities in the Health Department in 2011.

Shukla was arrested earlier in connection with a corruption case but was later released on bail.

The twin CMO murders

In October 2010, CMO Vinod Arya was killed while he was taking a morning walk. On April 2, 2011, Arya's successor BP Singh died under mysterious circumstances. His postmortem report confirmed murder, not suicide.

Soon after, Deputy CMO YS Sachan was arrested for Singh's murder.

The Mayawati government claimed that Singh was to expose Sachan and his involvement in the NRHM scam.

However, in June 2011, Sachan was found dead in jail, a day before his questioning. The focus then shifted to Shukla during the Sachan murder probe.

In July 2011, the Mayawati government ordered CBI probe into the CMO murders.

A few days later, Shukla was arrested and released on bail in connection with a graft case.
