Kolkata: In a bizarre twist in the corporal punishment case the Visva-Bharati university in West Bengal, the 10-year-old girl's parents were arrested along with the hostel warden and later granted bail. The girl was allegedly forced to drink her own urine for bed wetting.
While the warden was arrested over the allegations against her, the parents were arrested for entering the girls hostel without permission. The class 5 student of the Visva-Bharati university's Patha Bhavan was allegedly forced to drink her own urine because she wet her bed. The girl's family had lodged a police complaint against the warden at the girls hostel of the residential school. "The guilty must be punished. My daughter will never recover from this incident," the girl's mother said.
The warden, in turn, had filed a complaint saying that the parents stormed into the hostel at night and threatened her.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. "It is a very shocking incident. The concerned warden should be punished for this act. She should be suspended," NCPCR Chairperson Shanta Sinha said.
NCPCR member Vinod Kumar Tikoo said, "If it is true, it is the warden who should be punished. Corporal punishment has been banned in West Bengal state across the country."
The University has set up a four-member committee to look into the matter.
"We have received a complaint that a class 5 residential student of the Patha Bhavan was allegedly made to drink her urine as a punishment. A four member fact finding committee headed by former dean of students welfare, Aruna Mukherjee has been set up to look into the matter and submit its report to the vice chancellor of the University," a university spokesman said.
The incident happened on Saturday evening when the warden of Karabi hostel, Uma Poddar, while on an inspection found Punita guilty of bed wetting. She allegedly then made the girl drink her urine as a punishment.
